Selian Lutheran Hospital is a faith-based regional referral hospital owned by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT), North Central Diocese. It sits in a rural setting just outside Ngaramtoni in Arumeru District, about 10 km from Arusha on the Arusha–Namanga road. It began in 1954 as a single-building dispensary and became a full-service hospital in 1993.
With 160 beds, it serves Arumeru, Longido, Monduli and Ngorongoro districts, largely rural areas that include Maasai pastoralist communities, and takes referrals from as far as Manyara, Singida, Kilimanjaro, Dodoma, Tabora and Mwanza. Alongside a 24-hour emergency department, it runs an ICU and neonatal ICU, general, orthopaedic and paediatric surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and an endoscopy unit for OGD, colonoscopy and bronchoscopy. Diagnostics include ultrasound, a new digital X-ray, a CT scanner, ECG and echocardiography.
Consultant clinics run every weekday in internal medicine, paediatrics, surgery and orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmology, dermatology and dentistry, with physiotherapy and occupational therapy, counselling and psychology, and palliative care alongside. Its HIV care and treatment centre (ART, PMTCT, paediatric and adolescent HIV), RCH clinics and free obstetric fistula repair make it a strong choice for rural medicine, surgery and internal medicine in a well-run mission hospital. You can also join its community outreach clinics, which take care out to the surrounding communities.

Clinic days are set by the hospital and can change; we confirm your schedule before you arrive.
You follow the hospital's staff through their day, with an experienced EVN-assigned supervisor in your field. You leave with a supervisor reference and completion certificate, and we complete your university's elective paperwork.
You learn as part of the clinical team: working alongside the hospital's doctors, clinical officers, nurses and midwives: joining ward rounds, discussing cases, and following patients through clinics, the labour ward and theatre.

You learn alongside the hospital's clinical team on ward rounds, in clinics, on the labour ward and in theatre. Your supervisor guides how involved you become, based on your level of training, your university's guidelines and patient safety.
Official hours are Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 15:30. The day starts with a clinical meeting at 07:30, which you can join or skip by starting at 08:00, and you may leave earlier. Night shifts are optional if you want extra experience.
