01 · Overview
Ngarenaro Health Centre (Kituo cha Afya Ngarenaro) is a public primary care facility owned by the Government of Tanzania under the Arusha City Council, in central Arusha. It has served the city since 1990, and its services run 24 hours a day.
Its focus is maternal and child health. With 8–15 deliveries a day, its labour ward has its own major theatre for Caesarean sections, so obstetric emergencies are managed on site. A specialist obstetrics and gynaecology clinic sees referred antenatal and gynaecology cases, so students can follow women from the clinic through to delivery.
As a primary care centre it also sees around 30–35 outpatients a day. Its other services include HIV testing and treatment (VCT and CTC, for adults and children), reproductive and child health (RCH) with family planning and immunisation, ultrasound, cervical cancer screening, post-abortion care, a minor theatre and a well-equipped dental clinic, with its own pharmacy and laboratory. There is no general X-ray on site; patients who need specialist care beyond obstetrics are referred to hospital.

05 · Supervision
You follow the centre's staff through their day, with an experienced EVN-assigned supervisor in your field. You leave with a supervisor reference and completion certificate, and we complete your university's elective paperwork.
06 · How you'll learn
You learn as part of the clinical team: working alongside the centre's doctors, clinical officers, nurses and midwives: joining ward rounds, discussing cases, and following patients through clinics, the labour ward and theatre.
How involved you become is guided by your supervisor, in line with your level of training, your university's guidelines and, above all, patient safety and consent. Where you'll learn:

07 · Practicalities
- Hours
- Mon–Fri, 07:30 to 15:30. You can start at 08:00 or leave early; night shifts are optional.
- Dress code
- Scrubs and closed shoes. In theatre: green or blue scrubs and a mask.
- Getting there
- Daily transport to and from the centre is included if your accommodation is too far to walk. Some of our hostels are within walking distance.
- What to bring
- Your own scrubs (green or blue if you will be in theatre), closed shoes, a stethoscope, hand gel and masks.

Is Ngarenaro a hospital?
No. It is a government health centre, one level below a hospital, focused on primary care. Its labour ward has its own theatre for Caesarean sections, but there is no emergency department. For emergency medicine or general surgery, combine it with St. Elizabeth, Mount Meru or ALMC.
Can dental students be placed here?
Yes. The dental clinic offers extractions, fillings, scaling, root canal treatment, dental X-ray, dentures and orthodontics, so dental students see a broad range of everyday work.
Can I choose which departments I join?

Can I combine Ngarenaro with another hospital?
Yes. Depending on your goals, your placement can rotate across more than one of our partner hospitals in Arusha.
Who supervises me?
An experienced clinician in your field, arranged by EVN. Our team are local doctors who work in Arusha's hospitals, so we can match you with someone who teaches.
Will I get hands-on experience?
You learn alongside the centre's clinical team on ward rounds, in clinics, on the labour ward and in theatre. Your supervisor guides how involved you become, based on your level of training, your university's guidelines and patient safety.
What are the hours? Can I do night shifts?
Official hours are Monday to Friday, 07:30 to 15:30. The day starts with a clinical meeting at 07:30, which you can join or skip by starting at 08:00, and you may leave earlier. Night shifts are optional if you want extra experience.
What does the fee include?
Airport pick-up and drop-off, accommodation with breakfast and dinner, daily transport where needed, a pre-departure briefing, 24/7 emergency support, the placement fee and coordinator, and a city tour. Flights, visa and permit fees, insurance, vaccinations and lunch are not included.
Who can apply?
Healthcare students in their clinical years and qualified healthcare professionals. Placements are carried out in English.
Do I need a visa or permit?
Visa and permit requirements are set by the Tanzania Immigration Department and can change, so please check the official guidelines before you travel. Permit fees are not included in the programme fee. If anything is unclear, ask us.
