01 · Overview

Meru District Hospital (Hospitali ya Wilaya ya Meru), widely known as Tengeru Hospital, is a public district hospital owned by the Government of Tanzania under the Meru District Council. It sits in Tengeru, on the Arusha–Moshi road in Arumeru District, about 13 km east of Arusha city at the foot of Mount Meru, and serves the largely rural communities of the Meru District Council area.

With 110 beds and 100+ outpatients a day, it offers the full case mix of a Tanzanian district hospital outside the city: a new 24-hour emergency department, a major operating theatre, male, female and paediatric wards, and a maternity and labour ward with Caesarean sections done on site.

Specialist clinics run in surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, ophthalmology (eye) and mental health. It also runs services you will not find at every placement: a TB unit and ward and palliative and hospice care, alongside an HIV care and treatment clinic (CTC), reproductive and child health (RCH), an NCD clinic (hypertension and diabetes), a dental unit, physiotherapy, X-ray, ultrasound, laboratory and pharmacy. A strong choice if you are interested in rural medicine, infectious disease, community health or district-level care.
